Software updates that help keep your device safe and protected from online threats will be discontinued by Microsoft for Windows 7 software on January 14, 2020. You may have also seen a new popup window, telling you that Windows 7 support will be ending on this date.
How do I tell if I have Windows 7?
If your PC or Laptop is 6 years old or more, then it’s likely you are running Windows 7 software or older. You can also check by going to the start menu, clicking run or search and typing winver in the box and pressing enter. This will display an about window showing what version you are currently running.
What will happen to my device?
Every Windows 7 device that goes online for activities (such as banking, shopping or sending emails) after this date, is more vulnerable to hackers! You could be at risk and be compromised at any time.
What should I do?
The recommended option would be to move to a new device with Windows 10 Software already pre-installed. Windows 10 will have the latest security updates which will keep your personal data safe.
Alternatively, a new Windows 10 software licence can be purchased and installed on existing hardware. However, it can be confusing to know what to buy and tempting to purchase cheaply, with prices advertised from as little as £20. Be careful as sometimes these offers are too good to be true!
